Yoga for men

In the western society Yoga is today often associated with a female practice, but originally this discipline was born from and for men.

The ancient texts, such as the famous Hatha Yoga Pradipika, were actually only aimed at a male audience.

In indicating how to perform certain poses for example reference is made only to the typically male organs and never to the female ones. Even the first depictions showed naked or minimally covered men in a meditative state or intent on practicing more or less complex Asanas.

Let’s not forget that many of the yoga poses are related to the world of war, such as the warrior series, therefore we find again a reference to the male universe and to both physical and spiritual strength. Staying on the subject of battles, let’s move on to the epic period (about 6th century BC) to which a very rich source for understanding yoga dates back, the Mahabharata poem, whose most important part is the BhagavadGita. This is a collection of seven hundred verses whose protagonist is Arjuna, a great fighter supported by Lord Krishna.

We must also remember that the best known masters and philosophers of this discipline are precisely men, just think of names like Yogananda, Krishnamacharya, Vivekananda and Krishnamurti.

It’s a pity that over the centuries the male world has partially moved away from the universe of yoga since its benefits are so numerous!

Let’s take a look at some benefits:

  • strengthens and tones the muscles, especially those not involved in traditional sports;
  • greatly improves flexibility, especially in the case of other intense physical activity regularly practiced;
  • stimulates and strengthens the immune and lymphatic system;
  • reduces chronic muscle pain, such as neck and back pain, and states of tension;
  • effectively fights stress and anxiety;
  • tones and improves the health of internal organs, especially the lungs, stomach, intestines and sexual organs;
  • reduces the risk of injury by strengthening and stretching ligaments, tendons and joints;
  • effectively tones the body without burdening the joints;
  • helps to keep weight under control, improving metabolism, and to fight disorders such as tachycardia, hypertension and insomnia.

We could go on listing many other benefits of this millennial discipline, but the best thing is to experience them firsthand.
